There’s a version of career change that used to sound almost reckless: quit the job, go back to university full-time, hope the market’s still hiring by the time you graduate. Most people couldn’t afford to take that risk, so they didn’t. They stayed in roles that had stopped fitting, watching industries shift around them, telling themselves the moment for a proper change had probably passed.

That calculation has quietly changed. Artificial intelligence has moved from niche technical specialism to something nearly every industry now needs: not just software companies, but retail, healthcare, logistics, finance, even parts of the public sector that would have seemed unlikely candidates a few years ago. And the people filling those roles increasingly aren’t lifelong programmers. They’re former teachers, accountants, marketers, project managers – people who looked at where their sector was heading and decided to get ahead of it rather than be left behind by it.

What’s made that possible is how much more realistic postgraduate study in tech has become for working adults. Retraining no longer has to mean stepping away from income for two years. Proper, accredited degrees can now be completed online, at a pace that fits around an existing job, without pretending the qualification means any less because of how it was delivered.

OPIT (Open Institute of Technology) is one of the institutions built around exactly that shift. It’s a European-accredited online university offering degrees in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity and Digital Business, aimed squarely at people who already have careers and don’t want to put them on hold to build a new one.

Their MSc in Applied Data Science & AI is a fairly typical example of how this plays out: technical enough to be taken seriously by employers, structured flexibly enough that someone with a full-time job can actually finish it, and focused on the kind of data-driven decision-making that’s now expected across almost every function, not just IT departments.

    Conclusion

Of course, none of this makes a career change effortless. Retraining while working full-time is genuinely hard, and it takes longer than the adverts tend to suggest. But the barrier that used to stop most people – needing to choose between earning and learning – has largely disappeared.

What’s left is a more honest question: not “can I afford to retrain,” but “do I actually want to”. And it is something worth considering properly.

However, the many, increasing opportunities offered by an education (a Master’s Degree, actually) in Applied Data Science & AI are undeniable. A plus for every role, across all sectors. It’s not simply a career change but an investment in skills, time, and future. With the exciting chance of reshaping industries from the inside through your newly acquired expertise.
