Jubilee 2025: Rome Braces for Tourist Surge Amidst High Demand

Rome is preparing for an influx of visitors as Jubilee 2025 approaches, with an estimated 60 million people expected to take part in the year-long Catholic celebration. Experts warn that accommodation in the Italian capital will be in exceptionally high demand, with hotels and traditional guesthouses likely to be fully booked months in advance.

Travel specialist Lily Smith, from Monasteries.com, advises those planning a visit to consider an alternative option—staying in one of Rome’s many monasteries or convents.

“In 2024, around 30 million people travelled to Rome,” she said. “That figure is set to double this year, which will place immense pressure on the city’s accommodation and transport infrastructure.”

The Jubilee is one of the oldest traditions in the Catholic Church, dating back to 1300. Historically held every 25 years, it attracts pilgrims from around the world. The 2025 edition, themed “Pilgrims of Hope,” was chosen by Pope Francis to inspire unity and optimism in a world still recovering from the Covid pandemic and grappling with conflict.

Events have already begun, with February’s schedule including the Jubilee of the Armed Forces, Police and Security Personnel (8-9 February), the Jubilee of Artists and the World of Culture (15-18 February), and the Jubilee of Deacons (21-23 February). The celebrations will peak between May and June, with key gatherings such as the Jubilee of Children on 24 May, the Jubilee of Sport on 14 June, and the Jubilee of Youth on 28 July.

With demand for accommodation soaring, experts suggest that monasteries and convents offer a practical and affordable alternative. According to Smith, many of these religious guesthouses are equipped with modern amenities such as Wi-Fi and satellite TV while providing a peaceful retreat from the city’s busy streets.

She recommends four key tips for visitors considering monastery stays:

    1. Book early – Rome’s off-season no longer exists, and Jubilee events will make securing a room even more challenging.
    2. Check reviews – Researching guesthouses in advance can help ensure a comfortable stay.
    3. Choose the right location – Rome’s public transport is expected to be at full capacity, making proximity to key sites crucial.
    4. Register for the Pilgrim’s Card – This free digital pass allows visitors to access special Jubilee events and offers discounts on attractions.

For those looking to stay near the Vatican, monasteries and convent guesthouses in the Prati district provide convenient options. San Giuseppe House, for example, offers rooms from £62.96 per night in February, rising to £72.65 in June. The Hotel Casa Valdese, managed by the Waldensian Diaconia, has en-suite rooms available from £112.83 per night this month, while La Casa Il Rosario, run by the Dominican Sisters of Charity, offers stays from £42.06 per night in June.

With interest in Jubilee 2025 growing, Smith advises visitors to plan their accommodation well in advance. “Availability is already limited, so booking early is essential,” she said.
